{"id":1565,"date":"2017-11-21T10:21:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T15:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tobaccoexhibits.musc.edu\/?p=1565"},"modified":"2017-11-21T10:21:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-21T15:21:24","slug":"shine-a-light-on-the-next-tobacco-free-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tobaccoexhibits.musc.edu\/?p=1565","title":{"rendered":"\u201cShine a Light on the Next (tobacco free) Generation\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Conference(s):<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cShine a Light on the Next (tobacco free) Generation &#8211; 150 Attendees and the Great American Smoke Out with about 50 Attendees<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Exhibit: <\/strong><em>The Evolving Cigarette<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Featured at the PIP Moyer Recreation Center, Annapolis, MD\u00a0November 11, 2017 and the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD, during the week of November 13<sup>th<\/sup> with additional activities on Nov. 16.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Focus of Meeting<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_1568\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1568\" class=\" wp-image-1568\" src=\"https:\/\/tobaccoexhibits.musc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0009.jpg\" alt=\"Shine a Light on the Next (tobacco free) Generation\" width=\"333\" height=\"392\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shine a Light on the Next (tobacco free) Generation<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Shine a Light: <\/strong>Shine a Light on Lung Cancer provides hope, inspiration and support for those impacted by lung cancer and those at risk\u2014from survivors to the newly diagnosed to loved ones to healthcare professionals to those simply wanting to help. This event is not only to connect those in the lung cancer community but also promote healthy living for the next generation as well as hear stories of survival and inspiration through song, dance &amp; poetry.<\/p>\n<p>We combined the traditional Shine a Light program with a youth event which discouraged tobacco use (&amp; other harmful substances).\u00a0 We collaborated with community partners, specifically, community youth leaders and youth groups through schools and churches.\u00a0 The youth provided the entertainment (&amp; energy!) of their own creation through song, dance, skits, poetry, spoken word, etc. all with the common theme of promoting lung health.<\/p>\n<p>The event included The Evolving Cigarette \u2013 which generated a lot of discussion -; games, displays art and raffles were also included throughout the afternoon.\u00a0 We had testimonials from adults and children who have been affected by a lung cancer diagnosis.\u00a0 The young people had to complete a \u201cscavenger hunt\u201d for knowledge to ensure that they learned about the dangers of tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, everyone held up glow sticks for a moment of reflection and to \u201cshine a light\u201d on those impacted by lung disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Great American Smoke Out (GASO): <\/strong>The Evolving Cigarette display was then relocated to our hospital campus.\u00a0 It was displayed in the atrium of one of our pavilions where it was very visible to patients, visitors and staff for the week of the GASO.\u00a0 On the actual day of the Smoke Out we staffed a table with Tobacco Treatment Specialists who provided information on lung health, lung cancer prevention, and tobacco treatment resources.<\/p>\n<p>We also had entertainment by one of our physician assistants who wrote a song in memory of her father who passed away from lung cancer.\u00a0 All the proceeds from her song being downloaded will go to youth tobacco prevention programs.\u00a0 See the link at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/store.cdbaby.com\/cd\/kathleenvalentovishpotte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/store.cdbaby.com\/cd\/kathleenvalentovishpotte<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shine a Light on Lung Cancer provides hope, inspiration and support for those impacted by lung cancer and those at risk.
